FRESH LOCAL PRODUCE MARKET REPORT 17.10.17
FRESH PRODUCE MARKET REPORT
In case you haven’t seen the “Nine news exclusives”….. there is some extremely bad weather affecting QLD and Northern NSW. What does this mean? Some farms have been hit with 2 months of rain within a few days, hence they are underwater and other farms transport is cut off for a few days, vehicles simply can’t get access. The good news is there is still plenty of awesome produce in the market, read my report below so you pick the best of whats on offer for your home this week!
VEG YOU SHOULD BUY
Kale – Kale is in great supply this week, big bunches, vibrant colour, full of life. Personally, I love kale, extremely versatile you can use it in stir fry’s, salads, sauteed with garlic, roast it into crispy chips or use it in baked dishes instead of spinach. It is extremely cost effective to pump your greens each week, one bunch makes many meals. Check out my tips on how to “kill it with kale” this week.

Asparagus – Lets put it this way, do not go past Asparagus this week, awesome value and quality. Seriously easy veg to use, its a must in your basket this week. Simplest deliciousness: sauté briefly with sliced garlic, butter or olive oil, finish with lemon, salt and pepper. YUMMMMMM!
Corn – Despite the drenching up north corn is good to go! Get on it this week. Super sweet – no need for anything fancy! But if you do want to spice things up try this
Tomatoes – It looks like the market is taking a turn north this week, tomatoes are a little shorter in supply. However taste is 100%, my picks are romas and cherry toms. Get on these guys!
Iceberg – LOCAL NSW Iceberg lettuce is abundant. PRICES ARE FANTASTIC! Huge lettuce locally picked. Awesome value! Who doesn’t like a bit of crisp iceberg on a warm spring night? A must in the baskets this week. If you are thinking what else can I do with Iceberg, it is actually fantastic in Chinese stir-frys, add right at the end remove from heat and stir through until wilts slightly. This isn’t just an Aussie attack on Asian cuisine it is traditional in Cantonese cooking. Simple is best stir fry with garlic, shallots, soy ( tamari), sesame oil, peanut oil or grapeseed oil. Finish with salt and white pepper. DELICIOUS! Feeling fancy add some shiitake mushrooms!
Zucchini – Local NSW Zucchini’s have started, get on these guys. Dark vibrant green Zucc’s. Always best to buy from your closest sources! So when they are on you should embrace them!
BEST VEG AND SALAD LINES
Broad Beans, Broccoli, Cabbages, Corn, Dutch Carrots, Iceberg Lettuce, Silverbeet, Leeks, Potatoes (Royal Blue and Desiree), Tuscan Cabbage, Beetroot Bunches, Tomatoes (Roma and Cherry)
VEG AND SALAD LINES TO WATCH (BUY WITH CAUTION)
Avocados – Most fruit is coming in from WA. Quality is awesome, however, supplies are limited forcing prices high in the sky!
Sweet Potato – Still holding firm in price due to bad weather, however more in the market so expect prices to improve in coming weeks.
Wombok – OUCH! This is a no-go, unless you MUST have it! Prices are DIABOLICAL
Berries – There is actually a lot of fruit in the market! HOWEVER, 90% of it is below par. We have removed the “value” lines because we don’t feel comfortable in offering them, cheaper yes, but at the moment, the “cheaper” fruit is a no go! Blueberry regions got smashed this week with rain, there is fruit that was protected by covers and this is commanding a higher price, this is the only fruit we are comfortable with supplying or recommend purchasing. The other fruit has breakdown and soft berries, highly recommend not purchasing this fruit. The same with Strawberries, there are some phenomenal “Albion” variety strawberries, super sweet and super large, however, these are premium varieties and commanding the money. Good news is if you love Strawberries and Blueberries, the quality is there, bad news, you will have to pay for it. Mulberries, unfortunately, got annihilated by bad weather, will let you know once they are back on board.
Rockmelons and Watermelon – Yes, Yes, Yes – taste and value is there
Mangoes – How good are mangoes, well some of them, be selective, smell them look for a red blush and personally I think you can’t go past Kensington Pride (KP). Supermarkets always
Stonefruits – Still not flying in, however, there is some good fruit amongst the early season stuff, prices are firm.
Citrus – Cannot fault the Afourer mandarin, the flavour is epic, keep them in your baskets.
FRUITS TO WATCH (AVOID BUYING or BUY WITH CAUTION)
