FRESH LOCAL PRODUCE MARKET REPORT 8.11.17
FRESH PRODUCE MARKET REPORT
Damn, there are some big movers in the markets this week!
Teaser, broccoli and Cauli are no-nos, Yellow nectarines and White Peaches are the best eating stone fruit, Kale is abundant and its a great week for seafood, best fillets are Harpuka (very similar to blue eye cod)!
Read my market report below to find out what else is best in season and what else to avoid this week……
VEG YOU SHOULD BUY
Corn – Corn is back in the winner’s circle this week, prices have eased as supply has increased
Kale – Locally grown kale is an awesome alternative to your dose of greens this week, take advantage of its greatness, as some of the usual suspects like Broc and beans prices are quite firm. Grown within 50km of Sydney markets, this makes it a “green” alternative in more ways than one.
Cos Lettuce – This big boy has been shunned by the supermarkets, unsure why….. However when iceberg prices are firm its a great alternative and this week are one of those weeks, so sub out the iceberg and get on the Cos Lettuce!
BEST VEG AND SALAD LINES
Asparagus, Beetroots (bunches and loose), Cabbages, Cos Lettuce, Kale, Potatoes (Royal Blue and Desiree), Pumpkin, Silverbeet,
VEG AND SALAD LINES TO WATCH (BUY WITH CAUTION)
Rains in Queensland has caused some troubles – below lines are most affected
Broccoli, Cauli and Iceberg Lettuce – Supply is limited, prices are HIGH!
Wombok – STILL RIDICULOUSLY high in price
To Cherry or not to Cherry? Still, a little early, the varieties aren’t ticking the boxes, in my opinion, wait one more week and it will be time!
Peaches – White peaches are the pick of the peach this week, yellow peaches are in good supply, however, it’s early season fruit and the varieties haven’t got a real deep flavour as yet.
Berries – Short lived was the flush, prices are firming for Strawberries however quality and flavour is great. Blues are still really good value! Berries are MUST this week
Watermelon – Quality, Flavour and Value. Two thumbs up!
Mangoes – Get cheeky this week! Good value! Great flavour!
Nectarines – I think yellow nectarines are the pick of the stone fruit for flavour at the moment, with some other stone fruit varieties a little lacking in flavour. Yellow nectarines are a standout, get on these!
FRUITS TO WATCH (AVOID BUYING or BUY WITH CAUTION)
Rockmelons – Some bad weather up north has forced rockmelon prices up. Quality is average.
SEAFOOD AND MEAT MARKETS
Seafood and Fish – Harpuka is a clear winner in the seafood markets this week, GREAT value, it is a firm white fish very similar to blue eye cod (Trevalla). 2 fillets only $14.95 a must in the baskets this week.
Poultry – Free range chicken breast and Tenderloin remain great value, Real Free Range breasts only $14 p/kg
