The Year that was: 2020
It goes without saying that 2020 has been a huge year – and now more than ever I think it’s important to reflect on the wins. Delish wouldn’t be the incredible success it is without all the people involved – they make us who we are and make it possible for us to continue to deliver delicious, fresh produce to you and your family.
In January of this year, we were stoked to expand our team and set out implementing a series of exciting changes across the business. We developed our product base, kicking it off with Mexican flavours, which were a massive hit. We also expanded our delivery areas, to include the Central Coast, Illawarra region, Newcastle and Canberra – meaning we can now reach more people than ever. Over the coming months, this would prove more important than we could have imagined, as people were confined to their homes during the pandemic.
As an essential service, we saw a huge influx of new customers. During March our staff worked around the clock to ensure we could keep up with the demand, it was like nothing we’d ever experienced! We even had to make the really difficult decision to implement a waiting list for people who wanted to become customers, so that we could ensure we could continue to the provide the personalised service that makes Delish so special. We also wanted to be absolutely sure to prioritise the customers who have supported us over the years – our customers are the heart and soul of our business and during this difficult time we wanted to make sure we could do everything possible to relieve some of the strain.
In April, after frantically working behind the scenes looking for solutions on how best to welcome and service new customers in a time of unprecedented growth, we moved into a temporary, much bigger warehouse space! The day we moved in, Jaeger said to me, “I am going to work so hard to make this more than a temporary home for Delish.” Based on the events of the last few months, we had such a strong sense of what we could do with our business for the community, and we were both hugely motivated to make this our new – and permanent – Delish home.
In August, we were thrilled to establish a partnership with a well-known French chef, Manu, initially adding a bunch of his sauces to our product range. Jaeger and I met Manu at a fundraising event back on 2019 – we were super impressed he kept up the conversation, even though Jaeger accidentally called him Miguel! The sauces were so popular that in September we released our three-part series of Jaeger and Manu in the car park kitchen, along with the competition to win lunch cooked by the man himself.
In the last few months, we’ve been blown away by the support of our customers – both our loyal families and our new ones in the Central Coast, the Illawarra, Newcastle and Canberra. Jaegers older brother and mum live in Newcastle, so we’re pretty sure some serious word-of-mouth love has been coming our way.
In December we welcomed our second guest and long-term Delish client Benji Marshall to the carpark kitchen. There were certainly a few die- hard fans in the warehouse, who jumped at the opportunity for a selfie or two. Next we hosted the lunch with Manu with 4 lucky Delish clients and their guests. Manu served up a 3 course French inspired menu at his new venue
La Botanique, in Sydney. It meant so much to connect with some of our Delish families in person and we hope to be able to run more events like this soon. We’ve currently got a bunch of renovations in the pipeline, too, and we can’t wait to show you in the new year!
And to cap off what has been a massive year, we can officially announce that our temporary warehouse space is now our forever home. After 6 months of hard work and long hours, we’ve made our dream a reality. For me, it’s been so inspiring to be a part of such a hard-working team, who will stop at nothing to ensure we can deliver fresh, Aussie produce to as many home as we can.
As I am writing this the year is fast coming to a close, but it’s not quite over yet. Our team is well and truly in the thick of the Christmas rush but they’re dealing with the pressure like absolute legends. I want to take this opportunity to say how grateful I am for the team that we have at Delish – it’s a special feeling to know we’ve created a place that really adds value to the community. The feedback we receive from our customers always reminds us how much it means to deliver a personalised service, and that we need to go above and beyond to build connection and trust with you, our customers, in order to deliver the very best product and service we can. From the girls in the office, to our warehouse army and our drivers who are ninjas in the night, I want to say thank you for another massive year.
Finally, I want to send a huge shout out to you – all our Delish families. Thank you for your support, loyalty and friendship in what has been a very challenging year for so many people. There are sometimes bumps in the road, but we always feel the love and support from you – and from all of us to all of you, we wish you a very safe and very happy holiday season.
See you again from January 4th – we’ll be ready to roll up our sleeves and do it all again, delivering fresh, Aussie produce direct to your door.
